ASCENSION BAY PERMIT TOURNAMENT 2nd EDITION - 2016
On April 24, 2016 'the second edition of Ascension Bay Permit Tournament, was conducted. This sport fishing event was dedicated to fishing for permit using catch and release fly-fishing style. The main objective of this event is for raising funds for children in the Biosphere of Sian Ka'an. With a pole of charity with fishing items donated by our sponsors as Sage, Enrico Puglisi Flies, Diamondback, Hardy, RAPTURE, HATCH, Thomas& to Thomas, Rio Cortland, Alberto Coppini and sponsors of great importance as Frontiers Travel and Yellow Dog, the two largest American fishing agencies.
This year the innovative and world renowned, Enrico Puglisi, was the sponsor of the event.
The event, besides bringing together fishermen from different nations, is the ideal place to discover the beauty of the flora and fauna of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere.
The rule is very simple: the first place goes to who totals the most points (1 point for each inch-of the Permit from nose to fork of the tale). Penalty of 10 points who did not show up on time to return the day fishing and disqualification who is not presented to return.
The tournament was organized (22, 23 and 24 of April) in the characteristics village of Punta Allen officially declared in 2015 "the world capital of permit fishing" for 3 days fishing two days of dodged Crew (boats and guides) and a day of fishing vessel of origin at the time of registration, in way to give all participants the same chance of winning and interchange experiences together.
In this edition, (after a few situations that had to be canceled by higher problems) 23 participants were presented with a total of 15 boats, plus a double of the first edition.
The first day was characterized by great fishing. There were (7 fishes in total) with captures to more than 27 inches. The second day with 5 catches and a Permit of 32 inches caught by a young French woman, Claire Barret.
Before the award of this second edition, the committee of the tournament, thanks to funds from other issue, was donated to a disabled child a new titanium wheelchair. Sometime we forget really how lucky we are. The most beautiful moment was the slogan to "Carlita" the first thing she did was cry and laugh at the same time. There were also tears of joy by the participants and to all those present. There were a couple of piñatas (cardboard contraption shaped candies stuffed in a fish shaped hanging from a rope) were dedicated to young children so they could break and eat all the candy.
Winner of this second edition with 93.5 points was awarded to Alejandro Vega. He received a sculpture of the Italian artist Alberto Coppini, and a prize of $ 2,000usd. The second place with 74.5 points went to Ed Morgan, also awarded another sculpture by artist Coppini and a prize of $ 1,000usd. In third place with 23 points Miguel Encalada with another sculpture by artist Coppini.
After the awards ceremony, a charitable auction begun with donations of fishing materials that were donated by the sponsors. With that we were able to collect 8,000 dollars. Besides fishing gear, some permit sculptures made by the children were sold also, and artist Alberto Coppini donated 2000 dollars more.
After all of this had there were more cash donations by Yellow Dog in form of bonus offers, Frontiers, Thomas & Thomas, Enrico Puglisi Rockwell foundation and fishing lodge participants: Serenity Shardon, Punta Allen Fishing Club, La Pescadora and Grand Slam Fishing Lodge. Winners also donated part of what they earned to the villages children and schools.
At the end of the ceremony there was a buffet meal for everyone at the town’s main square. There was a group photo of all the participants with the huge permit sculpture made by the artist Coppini.
With this issue and donations we can now plan to repair parts of the public park, extended funds for chemotherapy for a town’s sick mother. The main objective required of this second edition is to renew the playground for small children with nice and safe toys. Also a computer (brail and voice) for a 10 years old girl named Estrellita suffering from vision problems will be bought.
